I never expected postpartum depression to be part of my motherhood journey, but after bringing my first son, Leyton, home, it hit me hard. I’ve always seen myself as a positive, uplifting person, so I made excuses for my feelings and tried to justify the crushing emotions I was experiencing. I couldn’t understand why I was crying multiple times a day or why I felt like I was having an out-of-body experience. Wearing a diaper, bleeding, and leaking milk everywhere added to the overwhelm.
Feeling isolated and confused, I didn’t realize I was facing postpartum depression until my doctor diagnosed me. As a scared, overwhelmed 20-something-year-old, I trusted her advice to try antidepressants as my first step. Looking back, I realize how many women suffer in silence, not recognizing the weight of what they’re feeling. Often, they’re told a pill will fix everything.
That’s why I’m sharing my story here on my blog, podcast, and with you, in hopes of encouraging other mamas who are struggling. It’s essential to speak up about your needs and never feel ashamed of what’s out of your control. It’s completely normal to ride the waves of hormones and to cry, but it’s also okay to ask for help.
In my experience, walking through the emotions instead of avoiding them has made me stronger in motherhood. By sharing postpartum resources for moms, we can learn together more about our bodies, mental health, and how God provides tools to help us choose joy instead of staying stuck in depression.
